Here’s an acoustic folk rock cover of California Gurls. Such a weird mishmash of genres, huh? But seriously, it is not my genre ignorance but this cover is truly a mixture of said genres. It is a happy, upbeat cover yet it is toned down. Don’t roll your eyes, I am not being ironic or sarcastic. Compared to the original, it is toned down but then the instrumentation just made my ears perk up. There’s that electric guitar in the background of the main guitar, giving the song tinges of rock. But since the acoustic guitar is the main instrument, it really gives off a folk vibe. Couple that with the vocals and the harmonies and the cute percussion and the faint hoohoo’s and baba’s, it screams folk! It’s interesting how the San Francisco band achieved this. The hooks and the harmonies and The Beach Boys even came to mind during and after the bridge. I say this cover is fantastic!
